Brocken (Saxony-Anhalt) (Germany)

Weather…

The Brocken, standing at 1,141 meters, is the highest peak in the Harz Mountains and all of Northern Germany. Located within the Harz National Park, the mountain is notorious for its extreme weather conditions, often compared to those of Iceland or the Alps. Due to its exposed position above the tree line, the summit features panoramic views extending up to 200 kilometers on clear days. Historically, the Brocken achieved world fame through Goethe's 'Faust' and the legends of Walpurgis Night, where witches are said to dance on the mountain top. During the division of Germany, the plateau was a restricted military zone, housing extensive surveillance facilities operated by the Stasi and the Soviet Union. Today, the summit is a major tourist attraction, accessible via the steam-powered Brocken Railway or famous hiking trails like the Goethe Path. At the top, visitors find a weather station, a television tower, and the Brockenhaus museum, which showcases the mountain's natural and political history.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Saxony-Anhalt side has access through scenic valleys, with the peak reachable via hiking trails or the scenic Harz Narrow Gauge Railway. Numerous well-connected local towns in the region function smoothly as traditional starting points for the summit ascent.
📅
Best season
The extremely exposed location ensures a harsh climate year-round, with the summer months naturally offering the best chances for unclouded long-distance views. In winter, the deep snow dramatically transforms the mountain into a rugged but highly fascinating terrain for hardy hikers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Ascents from within the national park largely pass through dense spruce forests, partly marked by bark beetles, over rocky and root-filled paths. The treeless summit plateau is fiercely windswept and provides a barren, almost alpine landscape right in the middle of the low mountains.
🎒
What to bring
Layered and completely windproof clothing is essential due to the notoriously sudden weather shifts and the frequently gale-force winds at the summit. Ankle-high hiking boots provide the urgently needed support and grip on the occasionally very uneven and highly rocky ascent routes.
🅿️
Parking
In the valley towns immediately surrounding the national park, there are several designated, typically paid hiker parking lots. These act as vital hubs where various scenic ascent routes converge and where you can completely safely leave your car parked for the entire day.
⚠️
Safety
The single greatest danger on this mountain is dangerously underestimating the extremely harsh climate; frostbite or hypothermia are very possible even outside deep winter. Visitors must strictly stay on the marked paths to protect the highly fragile nature of the national park area.
⏱️
Time needed
For the demanding hike up and back down on foot from the surrounding valleys, one should realistically calculate a full, physically challenging day. Those arriving via the narrow-gauge steam railway typically spend one to two hours fully exploring the windswept summit plateau.
