Halle (Saale), the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt, looks back on a millennia-old tradition of salt production that established its prosperity. The cityscape is defined by the five towers on the market square: the four towers of the Market Church of Our Dear Lady and the freestanding Red Tower. Halle is the birthplace of the famous composer George Frideric Handel, whose legacy is honored annually through the Handel Festival and a museum in his birthplace. An architectural highlight is Giebichenstein Castle, which is now part of the renowned art college. As the seat of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Martin Luther University, the city holds significant scientific importance. The historic old town remained largely intact during World War II, making it a valuable urban ensemble. With the Moritzburg, which houses a major art museum, and the Francke Foundations, Halle has an extraordinary diversity of cultural and social monuments.
