Naumburg upon Saale is the cultural center of southern Saxony-Anhalt and is internationally recognized for the Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This masterpiece of late Romanesque and Gothic architecture houses the famous donor figures, including the highly detailed statue of Margravine Uta. The city is tucked away in the gentle hills of the Saale-Unstrut wine region, Europe's northernmost quality wine-growing area, where numerous vintners press their wines along the river valleys. The spacious market square is framed by stately Renaissance bourgeois houses and the Renaissance town hall. A walk through the historic old town leads to the Marientor, the only completely preserved city gate in Naumburg. Music lovers are drawn to the Wenzelkirche, where the historic Hildebrandt organ resonates, an instrument that Johann Sebastian Bach once helped design. A special feature of the local transport system is the historic tram, affectionately known as Ille, which rattles leisurely through the streets on a short route. The interplay of top-tier architecture, deeply rooted musical history, and the adjacent terraced wine landscape gives the city a very distinct, cultivated character.
