Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and one of the oldest cities in the eastern federal states of Germany. Located on the Elbe River, the city gained European significance in the Middle Ages under Emperor Otto the Great, who established his imperial palace here. Magdeburg Cathedral, the burial site of Otto I, is recognized as the first Gothic cathedral on German soil and serves as the city's most prominent landmark. In the 17th century, Magdeburg became world-famous for the scientific experiments of Otto von Guericke involving the Magdeburg hemispheres, which demonstrated atmospheric pressure. Despite suffering heavy damage during the Thirty Years' War and World War II, the city has evolved into a modern industrial and logistics hub. The Green Citadel, a late work by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, provides a colorful architectural contrast to the city's historical heritage. As a vital junction at the waterway crossing, Magdeburg connects the Elbe with major canals, playing a key role in European inland trade. On 20 December 2024 an attacker drove a car into Magdeburg's Christmas market, killing six people and injuring hundreds. The attack triggered a nationwide debate on Christmas-market security.
