Point Alpha (Germany)

Weather…

Point Alpha was one of the most important US Army observation posts on the inner-German border during the Cold War. Located between Rasdorf in Hesse and Geisa in Thuringia, the post overlooked the strategically significant Fulda Gap, which was considered the most likely route for a Warsaw Pact tank invasion toward Frankfurt am Main. The base was manned around the clock and equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance technology to precisely record troop movements on the eastern side. Here, NATO soldiers and East German border troops stood directly opposite each other, often separated by only a few meters. Following German reunification in 1990, the base was decommissioned and later converted into a memorial. Today, the museum documents the military confrontation, the GDR border regime, and life in the shadow of the Iron Curtain. The preserved barracks, watchtowers, and border fortifications provide an authentic picture of the threat level at that time.
