Kassel, located in northern Hesse, is a city of international cultural significance, best known as the host of the world-renowned 'documenta' contemporary art exhibition. A central highlight is Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013 and considered the largest hillside park in Europe. It features the imposing Hercules monument, the city's landmark, as well as the artificial water displays (Wasserspiele), which represent a Baroque engineering masterpiece. Kassel's history is deeply intertwined with the Brothers Grimm, who collected many of their famous fairy tales while living here; today, the 'Grimmwelt' museum is dedicated to their life and work. Following massive destruction in World War II, Kassel was rebuilt as a modern city with spacious squares and functional architecture. Beyond documenta, the city features a rich landscape of museums, including Wilhelmshöhe Palace with its significant collection of antiquities and art gallery. Today, Kassel is a key industrial and logistics hub in central Germany and a prominent university town with approximately 200,000 residents.
