Fulda Abbey was founded in 744 by Saint Sturmius under the direction of Saint Boniface and rapidly evolved into one of the most significant spiritual centers of the Frankish Empire. Under the leadership of Rabanus Maurus in the 9th century, the abbey school became one of Europe's leading educational institutions, where science and theology were equally cultivated. The abbey possessed extensive privileges and was subject directly to the Pope, solidifying its political power within the Holy Roman Empire. In the 18th century, Fulda experienced a Baroque golden age, during which the medieval abbey church was replaced by the current Cathedral of St. Savior, designed by Johann Dientzenhofer. The cathedral's west choir houses the crypt containing the tomb of Saint Boniface, the 'Apostle of the Germans,' making it a major pilgrimage site. The adjacent City Palace and the Orangerie complete the Baroque ensemble of the former Prince-Abbey, which was dissolved in 1802 during secularization. Today, the site serves as the seat of the Diocese of Fulda and stands as a prominent monument of sacred architecture.
