Marburg is a historic university town in the state of Hesse, situated on the banks of the Lahn River and famous for its medieval architecture. Founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous, the University of Marburg is the oldest Protestant-founded university still in existence worldwide. The city's skyline is dominated by the Marburg Landgrave Castle, a fortress whose construction began in the 11th century and which now serves as a museum of cultural history. A primary landmark is St. Elizabeth's Church, completed in 1283, which stands as the earliest purely Gothic hall church in Germany and houses the shrine of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Historically, Marburg was a pivotal site during the Reformation, hosting the 1529 Marburg Colloquy where Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli debated the nature of the Eucharist. Currently, the city is a lively academic hub with a student population exceeding 25,000, blending centuries-old traditions with modern scientific research. The upper town, or Oberstadt, features a dense network of timber-framed houses and narrow alleys that reflect its well-preserved medieval urban layout.
