Fulda is a significant city in eastern Hesse and is considered the cultural and administrative center of the East Hesse region. The city is best known for its Baroque quarter, which houses architectural masterpieces of the 18th century such as the Fulda Cathedral of St. Salvator and the City Palace. The cathedral is the burial place of Saint Boniface, the Apostle of the Germans, making Fulda an important destination for pilgrims and the seat of the Diocese of Fulda. Historically, the city dates back to the Benedictine monastery founded in 744 by Sturmius, which was one of the most important educational centers in Europe during the Middle Ages. During the Cold War, the region gained strategic world importance through the Fulda Gap as a potential invasion route between East and West. Today, Fulda is an important transport hub and university location that combines tradition with modern services.
