The East Side Gallery is a permanent open-air gallery and memorial situated on the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall in Friedrichshain. Spanning 1.3 kilometers along Mühlenstraße, it was painted in 1990 by 118 artists from 21 countries who created over one hundred murals. The artworks focus on the political changes of 1989/90, the desire for freedom, and the fall of the Iron Curtain. One of the most famous images is the 'Fraternal Kiss' by Dmitri Vrubel. As the gallery is located on the former 'hinterland' wall facing the Spree river, it provides an authentic impression of the border fortifications. The structure has been under heritage protection since 1991. Due to weather-related decay and vandalism, the murals underwent extensive restoration in 2009, during which many of the original artists recreated their work. Today, the East Side Gallery stands as a global symbol of freedom, reconciliation, and the peaceful revolution in Germany.
