The Spartacist Uprising in January 1919 was an armed attempt by the left-wing Spartacus League to overthrow the fledgling parliamentary democracy in Berlin in favor of a council republic based on the Soviet model. The fighting was concentrated in Berlin's newspaper district, where insurgents occupied several editorial buildings. The interim government under Friedrich Ebert deployed regular army units and right-wing paramilitary Freikorps to violently suppress the rebellion. The clashes were brutal, resulting in hundreds of fatalities on both sides. A grim climax of the uprising was the extrajudicial murder of its leaders, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, by Freikorps soldiers on January 15, 1919. These events caused a deep and permanent rift in the German labor movement between Social Democrats and Communists. Today, various memorials in Berlin honor the victims and reflect on the complex history of this early stage of the Weimar Republic. The former sites of conflict in the newspaper district have since been largely redeveloped, but remain significant markers of Berlin's urban history.
