Berliner Mauer (Germany)

Weather…

The Berlin Wall was the most striking symbol of the Cold War and the division of Germany. It was erected on August 13, 1961, by the GDR leadership to stop the flow of refugees to the West, hermetically sealing off West Berlin from the surrounding territory for nearly 28 years. The border fortifications spanned approximately 155 kilometers and consisted of a complex system of concrete walls, barbed wire, watchtowers, and the notorious 'death strip.' Hundreds of people lost their lives attempting to cross this barrier in search of freedom. The fall of the wall on November 9, 1989, marked the end of the division and was celebrated worldwide as a victory for liberty. Today, only a few original sections remain, including the East Side Gallery with its artistic murals and the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße. The latter provides a chilling glimpse into the former border strip through a preserved section of the fortifications. The remnants serve as a memorial to the overcoming of boundaries and the vital importance of democracy.
