Berlin Olympic Stadium 1936
The Berlin Olympic Stadium was constructed for the XI Summer Olympic Games in 1936 and stands as one of the most prominent examples of National Socialist representative architecture. Designed by Werner March, the monumental structure was intended to showcase the alleged superiority of the Nazi regime. Despite the heavy propaganda, the games are best remembered for the triumphs of African-American athlete Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals. The stadium is part of the extensive Olympic Park, which also includes the Maifeld and the Waldbühne amphitheater. After World War II, the grounds served as the headquarters for British occupation forces for several decades. For the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the stadium underwent a massive modernization, during which its iconic new roof was added, respectfully integrating with the historical stone substance. Today, it is the home ground of Hertha BSC and a major venue for sports events and international concerts. The architecture now blends the stone monumentalism of the 1930s with modern high-tech features. Guided tours allow visitors to explore the complex history and architectural details of this landmark site.
