Partnach Gorge (Germany)

Weather…

The Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm) near Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a spectacular 700-meter-long gorge carved by the Partnach River into the limestone of the Wetterstein Mountains. Reaching depths of up to 80 meters, it gives impressive insights into the natural power of water and the geological history of the Alps. A system of paths and tunnels blasted into the rock allows visitors to hike through the gorge year-round, with massive ice formations and frozen waterfalls creating a magical backdrop in winter. The gorge was declared a natural monument in 1912 and was formerly an important route for floating timber down from higher elevations. Today, it serves exclusively touristic purposes and is a starting point for numerous hikes onto the Zugspitze massif. The constant humidity and cool climate within the gorge create a unique habitat for specialized plants and mosses. A visit to the Partnach Gorge is considered one of the most intense nature experiences in the Bavarian Alps.
