Regensburg, located on the Danube River in Bavaria, is considered one of Germany's oldest cities and impresses with its almost entirely preserved medieval cityscape. The city's origins trace back to Roman times, specifically 179 AD, when the legionary camp Castra Regina was established under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke), a masterpiece of medieval engineering from the 12th century, is the oldest surviving bridge in Germany and served as a model for many other bridge projects across Europe. Regensburg Cathedral (St. Peter's) is the most significant Gothic structure in Bavaria and is home to the world-famous Regensburger Domspatzen boys' choir. Since 2006, the Regensburg old town and Stadtamhof district have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, as they reflect the political development of the Holy Roman Empire as the seat of the Perpetual Diet from 1663 to 1806. Today, Regensburg is a dynamic economic hub focused on automotive manufacturing and electronics, as well as a prominent university town. Its historic architecture combined with the lively atmosphere along the riverbanks makes the city a cultural center of eastern Bavaria.
