Augsburg, located in southwestern Bavaria, is one of Germany's oldest cities, boasting a history that spans over 2,000 years. Founded in 15 BC as the Roman military camp Augusta Vindelicorum under Emperor Augustus, the city evolved into a major European trading metropolis during the late Middle Ages. Augsburg was significantly shaped by the Fugger banking family, who established the Fuggerei here in 1521, currently the world's oldest social housing complex still in existence. Another major heritage site is the Augsburg Water Management System, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019, documenting centuries of innovation in hydraulic engineering. The Town Hall, featuring the Golden Hall, is regarded as one of the most important secular Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. Augsburg is also deeply connected to the history of the Reformation, notably through the Augsburg Confession of 1530 and the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. Today, the city is a modern industrial and scientific hub, known for aerospace technology and as the home of the Augsburger Puppenkiste marionette theater and playwright Bertolt Brecht. Augsburg saw steady 2024-2025 growth as a base for aerospace suppliers such as Premium Aerotec and MTU. The Fugger city remained a growing tourism destination thanks to its UNESCO-listed historic water-management system.
