Ingolstadt, situated on the banks of the Danube in Upper Bavaria, is a city renowned for its historical depth and industrial prowess. It gained prominence in 1472 as the site of Bavaria's first university, establishing itself as a major center for higher learning for over three centuries. The city is also famously recognized as the birthplace of the Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516, which continues to govern beer production standards globally. Ingolstadt's medieval heart is protected by impressive fortifications, including the iconic Kreuztor gate, which stands as a symbol of the city's former defensive strength. In 1776, Adam Weishaupt founded the Order of the Illuminati here, embedding the city into historical and literary lore. Today, Ingolstadt is globally identified with Audi, as the automotive giant's headquarters and 'museum mobile' are located within the city. This blend of ancient academic tradition, military history, and cutting-edge manufacturing makes Ingolstadt a unique urban center in Southern Germany.
