Lechfall Füssen (Germany)

Weather…

The Lechfall near Füssen is an impressive natural monument and simultaneously a technical structure located on the southern edge of Bavaria. Here, the Lech River plunges about twelve meters over five tiers before entering a narrow rocky gorge known as the Magnustritt. The current form of the waterfall is the result of engineering measures from the late 18th century designed to stabilize the riverbed and harness water power. Geologically, the fall marks the breakthrough of the Lech through the limestone rocks of the Ammergau Alps, a process that began approximately 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. Spanning the falls is the Maxsteg, a pedestrian bridge built in 1895 that provides a direct view of the thundering water. Legend has it that Saint Magnus fled his pursuers at this spot by making a massive leap across the river, with the indentations in the rock interpreted as his footprints.
