Füssen is the romantic soul of the Allgäu region and forms the magnificent southern terminus of the famous Romantic Road, located right on the Austrian border. The appealing town is known worldwide as the "Gateway to the Royal Castles," as the fairy-tale structures of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau stand majestically in the mountains just a stone's throw away. Yet, Füssen itself enchants visitors with its medieval old town, where winding cobblestone streets are lined with pastel-colored patrician houses. Keeping watch above the rooftops is the Hohes Schloss (High Castle), one of the best-preserved late Gothic fortresses in Bavaria, which impresses guests with its fascinating illusionist (trompe-l'œil) paintings in the inner courtyard. Just below lies the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Mang, housing a splendid Baroque basilica and the Museum of the City of Füssen, which celebrates the town's rich historical tradition of lute and violin making. Nature lovers are inevitably drawn to the spectacular Lechfall, where the turquoise waters of the river plunge roaringly through a narrow gorge. The surrounding lakes, especially the Forggensee, invite you to unforgettable bike tours and relaxing boat trips against a memorable Alpine panorama.
