Redonda and Limón Lagoons (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Laguna Redonda and Laguna Limón Scientific Reserve is located in the northeastern Dominican Republic, in the municipality of Miches within El Seibo province. Laguna Redonda covers approximately 7 square kilometers and is a brackish water lagoon periodically connected to the sea via the Caño Celedonio channel. In contrast, Laguna Limón spans about 5 square kilometers and is a freshwater lake fed by several small streams. Both lagoons are part of a 53-square-kilometer protected area established by Decree 309-95. The ecosystems consist of extensive mangrove forests, marshlands, and tropical moist forests at the foothills of the Cordillera Oriental. These wetlands are vital habitats for numerous waterfowl, including ruddy ducks and herons, as well as various fish species that provide a livelihood for local fishing communities. The geological formation of the lagoons is closely linked to the Quaternary coastal development of the Samaná Bay region.
