The Sierra Oriental, also known as the Sierra del Seibo, extends across the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. Compared to the central mountain ranges, it is lower in elevation, with peaks rarely exceeding 800 meters, Loma Vieja being its highest point. Geologically, it is primarily composed of calcareous formations and volcano-sedimentary rocks dating from the Late Cretaceous period. The region is characterized by rolling hills and valleys that boast lush, evergreen vegetation due to high annual rainfall. Economically, the Sierra is of great significance for the cultivation of cacao, coffee, and rice, as well as for extensive cattle ranching. In recent years, ecotourism has gained prominence, particularly through attractions offering views over Samaná Bay and nearby natural sites. It also serves as a critical watershed for the eastern provinces of El Seibo and Hato Mayor, feeding numerous rivers in the region.

Getting there

Accessible via roads leading through the eastern plains, often approached from Hato Mayor or El Seibo. Many routes turn into basic dirt trails, making a sturdy vehicle the best option.

The drier months from December to April usually provide the most comfortable and stable hiking environment. Be prepared for high humidity and the possibility of brief rain showers all year round.

The mountains feature rolling, rounded peaks cloaked in dense, tropical greenery and small farms. The trails are commonly utilized by locals, ranging from wide dirt tracks to narrow, overgrown footpaths.

What to bring

Lightweight but protective clothing is handy to defend against insects and encroaching vegetation. Solid walking shoes with good tread and an adequate supply of drinking water are highly recommended.

Parking is generally straightforward in the larger towns or at the starting points of local tours. It is always wise not to leave valuables visible inside vehicles left near remote trailheads.

The network of agricultural paths can be confusing, making a local guide very helpful for orientation. Heavy rains can swiftly turn the clay-like soil into very slippery mud, increasing slip hazards.

A pleasant walk to enjoy the lower eastern hills typically requires around two to three hours. A more demanding trek aiming for higher elevations will usually span a half to a full day.
