Hanle is a small rural settlement in the Tadjourah Region of Djibouti, located within the vast and arid Hanlé Plains. Geographically, it is situated in a depression characterized by rocky hills and acacia groves, which are vital for the survival of local fauna and the nomadic communities. The population consists mainly of Afar pastoralists whose lives revolve around animal husbandry, particularly goats and camels. The settlement itself functions as a central point for dispersed communities to draw water from wells and engage in trade. Architecturally, Hanle consists of traditional Afar huts, known as 'daboyta', which are built from bent branches and mats, adapted to the harsh climate. The region experiences extreme temperatures and scarce rainfall, making water resources a critical asset. Hanle's isolation means it is accessible only by dirt tracks, and its residents rely on a subsistence-based lifestyle deeply rooted in ancient traditions.
