Gourabous is a village in the Dikhil Region of southwestern Djibouti, situated in a rugged terrain characterized by deep wadis and stony plateaus. The settlement functions as a local center for the Afar communities living in the surrounding hills. Historically, these remote villages were interconnected by ancient trade routes used for transporting salt and incense. Today, Gourabous has basic facilities such as a primary school and a small health post serving the local population. The flora and fauna of the region are adapted to extreme desert conditions and include species such as the Dorcas gazelle and various birds of prey. Water supply is a constant challenge and is based on the use of seasonal watercourses and deep wells. The traditional lifestyle of the residents is closely linked to the seasonal migration of their herds, with social cohesion secured through strong clan structures. Despite its isolation, Gourabous plays an important role in the administrative registration of the nomadic population in this sector of the Dikhil Region.
