Galafi is a small settlement in the Dikhil Region of Djibouti, holding immense strategic importance as the primary border crossing with Ethiopia. Located on the National Highway 1, it serves as the main gateway for the trade corridor between the Port of Djibouti and landlocked Ethiopia. An overwhelming majority of Ethiopia's imports and exports are processed through this crossing, making it a lifeline for the Ethiopian economy. The settlement itself is small, consisting mainly of facilities that support the border operations, such as customs offices, freight forwarding companies, and rest areas for the thousands of trucks that pass through daily. The climate is extremely hot and arid, typical of the Danakil Depression, near which it is located. The population is sparse, comprising mainly Afar people as well as workers associated with the border operations. Infrastructure is continuously being developed to handle the growing volume of trade, including road upgrades and expanded border facilities. Security is high, as the stability of this corridor is of critical importance to both nations.
