Mariel is a pivotal port city located in the Artemisa Province on the northern coast of Cuba, approximately 40 kilometers west of Havana. Founded in 1762, the town gained strategic importance during the 19th century as a primary outlet for sugar and agricultural exports. The port gained international notoriety in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift, an event in which over 125,000 Cubans departed the island for the United States. In modern times, Mariel has become the site of the country's most significant economic development project, centered around the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM). This zone features a state-of-the-art container terminal designed to accommodate Post-Panamax vessels due to its deep-water access. Beyond maritime logistics, the region is a major industrial hub for cement production and power generation, hosting one of Cuba's largest thermal power plants. The town itself retains its seafaring character through its historic architecture and bustling harbor district.
