💡 Tips

  • The city is known as a citrus capital; take advantage of the abundant and fresh local fruit juices.
  • Because it sits on the Carretera Central, be extremely mindful of heavy truck traffic when crossing the main road.
  • For local trips, look for the shared taxis ('máquinas') that run frequently along the main thoroughfares.
  • Keep small denominations of Cuban Pesos (CUP) handy, as change can be scarce at street-side stands.

Contramaestre is a developing city in the Santiago de Cuba Province, named after the Contramaestre River that flows through its territory. The settlement began to expand in the early 20th century and remained part of the Palma Soriano municipality until the administrative restructuring of 1976. The city is located in one of the most fertile regions of eastern Cuba, making it a vital center for the agro-industrial sector. It is particularly noted for the production of citrus fruits, coffee, and sugarcane, as well as large-scale food processing facilities. Historically, the surrounding area is deeply connected to the Cuban struggle for independence, having served as a site for numerous military operations during the liberation wars. Modern Contramaestre features a planned urban layout and growing social infrastructure. Its strategic position along the Carretera Central (Central Highway) makes it a crucial transportation hub between the major cities of Bayamo and Santiago de Cuba.
