Lake Louise (Canada)

Weather…

Lake Louise is a world-renowned glacial lake located within Banff National Park in the Alberta Rockies, celebrated for its bustling turquoise waters and its dramatic backdrop of the Victoria Glacier. Situated at an elevation of 1,731 meters, the lake's distinctive color is the result of 'rock flour', fine particles of silt suspended in the glacial meltwater that reflect the blue-green spectrum of sunlight. Originally known to the local Stoney Nakoda First Nations as the 'Lake of the Little Fishes,' it was renamed in the late 19th century after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. On the lake's eastern shore sits the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, a grand railway hotel originally constructed in 1890 to promote luxury tourism along the Canadian Pacific Railway line. Geologically, the lake is approximately 90 meters deep and spans 2.4 kilometers in length, with its water temperature remaining near freezing even in peak summer. The surrounding area gives some of the most spectacular hiking in Canada, including the trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers and the historic Lake Agnes Tea House, providing vistas of the high-alpine environment. During the winter months, the lake transforms into a majestic natural skating rink and serves as a venue for the Ice Magic Festival. Despite its heavy traffic as a premier global destination, the area remains a strictly managed ecological zone, requiring careful coordination to protect the subalpine flora and local wildlife populations like grizzly bears and mountain goats.
