Pickering is situated in Ontario's Durham Region, immediately east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. Settled by British Loyalists in the 1770s, it was officially incorporated as a township in 1811. The city's identity is strongly tied to the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, one of the world's largest nuclear facilities, which has significantly bolstered the local economy since its inception in the 1970s. Its southern boundary features Frenchman’s Bay, a natural harbor that has evolved into a hub for recreational boating and waterfront tourism, centered around the Nautical Village. To the north, Pickering extends into the Oak Ridges Moraine, an ecologically significant landform providing vital natural habitats and extensive trail systems. The city is home to the Seaton community project, one of Canada's largest planned urban developments. Pickering serves as a vital transportation link with direct access to Highway 401 and the GO Transit commuter network.
