Ajax is a town in Ontario's Durham Region, established in 1941 as a planned community to support the Defense Industries Limited (DIL) munitions plant during World War II. The town was named after the HMS Ajax, a British Royal Navy cruiser that gained fame in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate. Following the war, the industrial site served as a massive temporary campus for the University of Toronto to accommodate an influx of engineering students, giving the town a unique academic foundation. Formally incorporated in 1955, Ajax has transitioned into a diverse suburban municipality within the Greater Toronto Area. A defining feature is its extensive waterfront park system along Lake Ontario, which preserves six kilometers of natural shoreline. The town maintains its historical connection through its street names, which are predominantly named after crew members of the HMS Ajax. Ajax has excellent transit connectivity via Highway 401 and the GO Transit rail network.
