Dundurn Castle (Canada)

Weather…

Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, is a magnificent neoclassical mansion completed in the 1830s. It was the residence of Sir Allan MacNab, an influential politician and former Premier of the Province of Canada. The 40-room building was constructed on the site of a former military outpost from the War of 1812, known as Burlington Heights. The architecture features grand columns and a sprawling terrace that provides an impressive view of Burlington Bay. At the time of its completion, Dundurn Castle was a technological marvel, equipped with early forms of gas lighting and running water. In addition to the main house, the estate includes formal gardens, a carriage house, and a dovecote. Today, the property operates as a living history museum where costumed interpreters illustrate the lives of the MacNab family and their servants as they would have lived in 1855. It provides a deep insight into the social hierarchy and lifestyle of the wealthy elite in colonial Upper Canada.
