Brantford lies on the Grand River in southern Ontario and, with around 105,000 residents, is a tradition-rich mid-sized city. It was named after Mohawk chief Joseph Brant, who resettled his people here in 1784 after the American Revolutionary War. Brantford is closely associated with inventor Alexander Graham Bell, who conceived the idea of the telephone here in 1874; the Bell Homestead is today a National Historic Site. Wayne Gretzky, perhaps the most famous ice hockey player of all time, was also born here. Economically, Brantford was once a major center for farm machinery (Massey-Harris) and is now growing into an education and logistics city.
