Belleville is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Moira River on the Bay of Quinte and serves as the seat of Hastings County. Settled by United Empire Loyalists in the late 18th century, the community was originally known as Meyers Creek before being renamed Belleville in 1816 in honor of Lady Arabella Gore. Its strategic location between Toronto and Montreal allowed Belleville to grow into a significant industrial hub, particularly noted for its dairy and cheese production history. A primary architectural highlight is the Glanmore National Historic Site, an ornate mansion built in 1883 that now functions as a public museum. The city features many beautiful parks, such as Zwick's Centennial Park, which hosts various festivals and events along the waterfront. Today, the economy is powered by manufacturing, logistics, and education, with Loyalist College serving as a major regional institution. Its proximity to Prince Edward County also makes Belleville a popular base for visitors exploring the local wineries and sandy beaches.
