Port Nelson is the only remaining settlement on the island of Rum Cay, part of the southern Bahamas. The settlement is located on the protected southern coast of the island and is a relic of an era when Rum Cay was a flourishing center for salt and pineapple exports. After a devastating hurricane in 1926 and the decline of the salt industry, the population shrank significantly, giving Port Nelson a quiet and almost meditative atmosphere today. Geographically, the area is surrounded by coral reefs considered world-class diving sites, including the wreck of HMS Conqueror, the first steam-powered warship of the British Navy, which sank off the coast in 1861. Architecture in Port Nelson consists partly of ruins of former plantation houses and partly of simple, modern residential buildings. Residents primarily make a living from fishing and small-scale tourism, with sailors often using the bay as an anchorage on their way south.
