Cockburn Town is the administrative center of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, historically considered the site where Christopher Columbus first made landfall in the Americas in 1492. The town was named after Sir Francis Cockburn, a 19th-century British governor. The architecture is marked by colonial influences, with the Holy Cross Church being one of its most prominent buildings. Geographically, Cockburn Town is located on the west coast of the island, overlooking the deep blue ocean known for its steep underwater walls. Near the town are several monuments commemorating Columbus's landing, as well as the Dixon Hill Lighthouse from 1887, one of the last hand-operated lighthouses in the world. Today, Cockburn Town is a quiet hub for research and tourism, particularly through the Gerace Research Centre, which attracts scientists for oceanographic studies. The local economy is supported by tourism, specifically diving and history.
