Haidra Archaeological Site (Tunisia)

Weather…

Haidra, ancient Ammaedara, is one of the oldest and most extensive Roman archaeological sites in North Africa, located in western Tunisia near the border with Algeria. The city was established in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian as a strategic base for the Legio III Augusta before the legion moved to Theveste. Its monumental remains include a well-preserved triumphal arch dedicated to Septimius Severus in 195 AD, which marks the entrance to the ancient urban core. A dominant feature of the landscape is the massive Byzantine fortress, built in the 6th century, which remains one of the largest defensive structures from that era in the Maghreb. The site is also notable for its numerous early Christian basilicas, reflecting its status as a significant bishopric during the late Roman and Byzantine periods. Visitors can explore the ruins of a theater, forum, and unique tower-like mausoleums that characterize the transitional architecture of the region over half a millennium.
