Tébessa is located in the far east of Algeria near the Tunisian border and is a city characterized by its exceptionally deep historical roots. Founded by Carthaginians and later flourishing as the Roman colony of Theveste, it served as the headquarters for the Third Italic Legion during the 1st century AD. Among its most striking monuments are the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, built in 211 AD, and the massive Byzantine walls that still encircle the historic city center today. Tébessa is also home to an expansive early Christian basilica complex, which was a significant religious site in North Africa. Geographically situated on a high plateau at an altitude of about 830 meters, the city enjoys a temperate climate with cool winters. Today, Tébessa stands as a strategic hub for cross-border trade and a cornerstone of Algeria's mining industry, specifically for phosphate extraction from the nearby Djebel Onk deposits.
