The Sra Ouertane phosphate mine in the Kef Governorate is one of Tunisia's most ambitious industrial projects of recent decades. With estimated reserves of up to 5 billion tons of phosphate rock, the deposit is considered one of the largest untapped resources of its kind globally. The project aims to expand and geographically diversify Tunisian phosphate production, which has traditionally been concentrated in the Gafsa basin. Development plans include not only open-pit mining operations but also the construction of an integrated chemical complex for the local production of fertilizers and phosphoric acid. This requires massive infrastructure investments, including specialized water supply systems and rail links to the ports of Bizerte or Skhira. Sra Ouertane has the potential to return Tunisia to the top ranks of global phosphate exporters and to significantly drive economic development in the underdeveloped interior regions of the northwest.

Since the planned mining operation is still largely in a completely undeveloped, purely theoretical planning stage, there are currently absolutely no realistic opportunities for interested tourists to enjoy formal, organized visits or guided tours of the remote site.

The vast, impressively barren landscape where the valuable, unused minerals lie deeply hidden can undoubtedly be surveyed best during extended, quiet hikes or leisurely scenic drives winding straight through the extensive, beautifully remote rural outskirts.

Since, fortunately, there is absolutely no massive active mining taking place here yet, travelers naturally cannot purchase extracted raw materials, but can instead discover the deeply rooted, highly authentic traditional local agriculture in the surrounding villages.
