The Cacica Salt Mine, located in Suceava County, is one of the oldest salt mines in Romania where salt was extracted through recrystallization. It was opened at the end of the 18th century, specifically in 1791, under the Austrian administration of Bukovina. The mine is famous for its impressive galleries and chambers, hand-carved directly into the salt rock. One of the main attractions is the Saint Barbara Roman Catholic chapel, located at a depth of 21 meters, where religious services are still held today. At a depth of 35 meters, there is a ballroom equipped with balconies, formerly used for festivities. Another unique feature is the artificial salt lake located 38 meters underground, where small rafts used to transport visitors. Today, the mine serves both tourism and halotherapy, as the salty air is highly beneficial for respiratory conditions.
