Putna Monastery is one of Romania's most vital religious and cultural centers, founded by Prince Stephen the Great between 1466 and 1469. Located in the Bukovina region near the Ukrainian border, it was the first monastery commissioned by the Moldavian ruler. Designed as a royal necropolis, the monastery holds the tomb of Stephen the Great, his family members, and several subsequent princes of Moldavia, earning it the title 'Jerusalem of the Romanian People.' Although the original church was damaged by earthquakes and invasions and rebuilt in the 17th century, it retains the unique Moldavian architectural style, blending late Gothic and Byzantine influences. The monastery's museum houses a priceless collection of medieval manuscripts, gold-threaded embroideries, and liturgical items from the 15th century. The Putna treasury is widely considered the richest of its kind in Southeastern Europe. Today, Putna remains a major pilgrimage destination and a powerful symbol of Christian faith and historical continuity in the region.
