Ialomița Cave (Romania)

Weather…

Ialomița Cave is located in the Bucegi Mountains, Dâmbovița County, on the right bank of the Ialomița Gorges at an altitude of 1530 meters. The cave spans a total length of approximately 480 meters, most of which is accessible to tourists. At the cave's entrance sits the Ialomița Monastery, originally founded in the 16th century by Prince Mihnea Vodă cel Rău. The cave is renowned for its impressive galleries, including the Mihnea Vodă Gallery, the Decebal Gallery, and the Maria Gallery. Geologically, it was carved into Cretaceous limestone and features various stalactites and stalagmites, although some have been damaged over time. The interior maintains a constant temperature between 9 and 12 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels exceeding 90 percent. Archaeological findings indicate that the cave was used as a shelter and cult site since prehistoric times, later hosting hermit monks. Today, it remains one of the most visited caves in the Southern Carpathians, uniquely combining religious heritage with natural karst wonders.
