Babele (Romania)

Weather…

Babele is a group of mushroom-shaped rock formations in the Bucegi Mountains, located at an altitude of approximately 2,216 meters. These geological structures were formed through the slow differential erosion of rock layers of varying hardness, primarily by wind and frost. The name translates to 'The Old Women' in Romanian, referring to the rocks' resemblance to seated, hunched figures. The formations consist mainly of conglomerates and limestone and are situated in close proximity to the Sphinx of Bucegi. Babele serves as a central hub for hiking trails within the Bucegi National Park and is easily accessible via a cable car from Bușteni. The region is not only geologically significant but also rich in myths and legends, often linked to the Dacian past and spiritual energies. As a natural monument, the site is strictly protected to preserve the fragile structures from vandalism and excessive wear caused by tourism.
