Târgoviște, located in southern Romania along the Ialomita River, served as the prestigious capital of Wallachia for over three centuries. The city is deeply linked to the reigns of 33 different princes, most notably Vlad the Impaler (Dracula), who commissioned the iconic Chindia Tower in the 15th century. This tower, part of the wider Princely Court complex (Curtea Domnească), remains the city's most recognizable symbol and provides a glimpse into its glorious past through its ruins and well-preserved churches. Târgoviște was also a vital cradle of culture, hosting the first printing press in the region in 1508. In modern times, the city gained international attention as the site of the trial and execution of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife in December 1989. Today, Târgoviște thrives as a regional administrative and industrial hub, balancing its profound medieval heritage with modern university life and urban development, making it for those interested in Romanian history and legendary lore.
