Romanian Athenaeum (Romania)

Weather…

The Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest stands as the country's most prestigious concert hall and a quintessential symbol of national culture. Built between 1886 and 1888 based on the designs of French architect Albert Galleron, its construction was famously supported by a public subscription campaign with the slogan "Give one leu for the Athenaeum." The building features a Neoclassical style with an impressive 41-meter-high dome and a portico of eight Ionic columns. Inside, the main circular hall is adorned with a massive 75-meter-long fresco painted by Costin Petrescu, depicting 25 pivotal scenes from Romanian history. As the permanent seat of the George Enescu Philharmonic, it hosts numerous international classical music events, most notably the George Enescu Festival. Since 2007, the Athenaeum has been included on the list of European Heritage sites, reflecting its significance as a beacon of European cultural values and architectural excellence.
