Old Princely Court (Romania)

Weather…

The Old Princely Court, known as Curtea Veche, is the oldest medieval monument in Bucharest and marks the historical heart of the Romanian capital. The complex was established in the 15th century by Prince Vlad III Dracula (Vlad the Impaler) and served for centuries as the primary residence for the rulers of Wallachia. The ruins visible today include foundations, vaulted cellars, and fragments of the original palace structure, providing a glimpse into medieval defensive and residential architecture. Located right next to the court is the Old Princely Court Church, the city's oldest religious building, where many Wallachian princes were once crowned. Throughout history, the court was repeatedly damaged by fires and wars before being officially abandoned in the 18th century. Archaeological excavations in the 20th century unearthed numerous artifacts and underground passages, which are now part of an open-air museum. Curtea Veche remains a symbolic site, as it is where the 1459 document first mentioning the name of Bucharest was signed.
