Grigore Antipa Museum (Romania)

Weather…

The "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History in Bucharest is one of Romania's oldest and most significant scientific institutions. Established in 1834 by Mihalache Ghica, the museum achieved international fame under the leadership of scientist Grigore Antipa, who directed it from 1893 to 1944. The current building on Victory Square was inaugurated in 1908. Antipa revolutionized museum exhibition techniques by creating the first biological dioramas, showcases that display animals in their reconstructed natural habitats, a concept later adopted by museums worldwide. The collection houses over two million specimens, including rare fossils, insects, minerals, and ethnographic artifacts. Its most famous exhibit is the massive, nearly complete skeleton of Deinotherium gigantissimum, a prehistoric relative of the elephant. Following a major digital and interactive renovation completed in 2011, the Antipa Museum remains one of the most visited and modern cultural destinations in the Romanian capital.
