National Theatre Bucharest
The National Theatre "I.L. Caragiale" in Bucharest is Romania's premier theatrical institution, boasting a rich heritage that dates back to its founding in 1852. The original building was located near Calea Victoriei but was tragically destroyed during aerial bombardments in 1944. The current structure, located in University Square, was built between 1964 and 1973 in a modernist style led by architect Horia Maicu. A significant renovation project between 2010 and 2014 removed the heavy concrete facades added during the 1980s, restoring the building's original "hat-like" roofline and modern aesthetic. Today, the complex houses seven diverse performance spaces, including the Ion Caramitru Hall with a capacity of over 900 seats. It remains a cornerstone of Romanian culture, staging both classical masterpieces and innovative contemporary plays. The National Theatre's revitalization has turned it into a dynamic cultural hub, blending historical significance with cutting-edge theatrical technology.
