The Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest serves as the official residence of the President of Romania and is home to the National Cotroceni Museum, representing over 300 years of history. The site originated in 1679 as a monastery founded by Prince Șerban Cantacuzino, parts of which still stand today. In the late 19th century, King Carol I commissioned French architect Paul Gottereau to build a royal palace on the grounds for Crown Prince Ferdinand and Queen Marie. The palace interior is renowned for its eclectic and ornate styles, including neo-Byzantine, Art Nouveau, and German Renaissance influences, largely curated by Queen Marie herself. During the communist period, it was repurposed as the Pioneers' Palace, but after 1990, it regained its status as a symbol of state authority. The surrounding Cotroceni Gardens and the meticulously reconstructed monastery church add to the complex's architectural significance, making it a unique destination where religious heritage, monarchical splendor, and modern governance converge.
