The city was renamed in 1960 in honor of King Mohammed V, marking its transition from a modest fishing village to a premier economic powerhouse. Celebrated as the "City of Flowers," it is characterized by lush public parks and flower-lined streets that provide an elegant counterpoint to its industrial sector. Mohammedia is home to the nation's largest oil refinery (SAMIR) and the country's most important petroleum port, handling the bulk of Morocco's energy imports. Despite its industrial importance, the city maintains a reputation as a desirable residential area and seaside resort, popular for its sandy beaches like Plage des Sablettes and premium leisure facilities including a prestigious golf course.
