San Giovanni Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

The San Giovanni Fortress, also known as St. John's Castle, towers 280 meters above the medieval town of Kotor in Montenegro. The fortifications have their origins in Illyrian times but were significantly expanded between the 9th and 19th centuries by the Byzantines and Venetians. To reach the top of the fortress, visitors must climb approximately 1,350 steps that lead along a 4.5-kilometer ruin of defensive walls. The entire defense system of Kotor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017 as part of the Venetian Works of Defence between the 15th and 17th centuries. From the upper bastions, there is a strategic overview of the innermost part of the Bay of Kotor, which made the fortress historically impregnable. Despite severe earthquakes in 1563, 1667, and 1979, the basic structure of the fortress remained largely intact.
