Perast is a photogenic Baroque town tucked away in the Bay of Kotor, renowned for its illustrious maritime history and exceptionally preserved architecture. During Venetian rule between the 15th and 18th centuries, the town experienced its golden age as a prominent naval and commercial hub. This legacy is visible today in the 16 grand aristocratic palaces and numerous Baroque churches that define its skyline. The most prominent landmark is the 55-meter-high bell tower of St. Nicholas Church, the tallest in the entire bay. Floating just offshore are two iconic islets: St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks, the latter being an artificial island home to a significant pilgrimage church. Perast has successfully maintained its historic integrity because modern development is strictly controlled. The town was once home to a prestigious maritime academy where even Russian captains were trained under Peter the Great's decree. Today, Perast provides a more tranquil alternative to nearby Kotor, providing an unmatched atmosphere of elegance and historical depth.
